Volume
Volume is the space of an object in real time, or 3 dimensional space. Volume promotes mass.
Volume and Mass
A container can hold a volume but only if the structure is well defined, otherwise the volume's space becomes lost in the composition.
Primary and Secondary Contours
On a piece of mass you have an outer edge and that edge is the primary contour, the secondary contours are the lines inside the space of the mass.
